Maureen O'Hara
Maureen O'Hara (born Maureen FitzSimons 17 August 1920 - - 24 October 2015) was an Irish actor and singer who was a star in Hollywood throughout the 1940s to '60s. Her redhead-like nature has made her a favorite choice for her strong and intelligent heroines in Westerns and adventure movies. Her potential for stardom was initially recognized by actor Charles Laughton, who brought her to Hollywood and on numerous occasions she collaborated with director John Ford and longtime friend John Wayne. O'Hara was born and was raised in Dublin, Ireland, in an Irish Catholic family. She aspired to be an actress from a very young age. At the age of 10, she trained at the Rathmines Theatre Company and the Abbey Theatre. She received a screen-test, which was deemed unsatisfactory However, Charles Laughton saw potential, and suggested that she co-star with him in Alfred Hitchcock's Jamaica Inn in 1939. RKO Pictures offered her a contract. She was also transferred to Hollywood in 1939 to appear with him in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. From there, she went on to enjoy a long and highly successful career, and acquired the nickname "the Queen of Technicolor". She appeared in films such as How Green Was My Valley (1941) (her first collaboration with John Ford), The Black Swan with Tyrone Power (1942), The Spanish Main (1945), Sinbad the Sailor (1947) as well as the classic Christmas film Miracle on 34th Street (1947) with John Payne and Natalie Wood as well as Comanche Territory (1950). O'Hara starred in Rio Grande (1950) as O'Hara, a character played by John Wayne, her most close friend. The Quiet Man (1952), The Wings of Eagles(57), McLintock were the next films. (1963), and Big Jake (2001). A lot of people believed that Wayne and O'Hara were either in an affair or were married because of their strong connection. O'Hara became more motherly as she grew older, appearing in films like The Deadly Companions (1961) as well as The Parent Trap(61) and The Rare Breed (1966). In 1971, she retired from film production. But she returned 20 years later to star alongside John Candy in Only the Lonely (1991).
